Frozen Shoulder/Shoulder Pain

Frozen shoulder syndrome, also known as adhesive capsulitis, is an extremely painful and debilitating condition that affects approximately 3% of the population. A “frozen shoulder” is characterized by severe shoulder pain, very limited shoulder range of motion, and noticeable disruption of sleep due to pain.

Many times the patient does not know what brought on the condition. Research shows that it affects women more than men, and in about 10 to 20% of patients, they can develop frozen shoulder syndrome in the other shoulder as well.

Current medical treatments often include cortisone injections, anti-inflammatory drugs, and physical therapy that are directed at the symptomatic shoulder. If these attempts fail, surgical procedures such as manipulation under anesthesia or arthroscopic surgery may be attempted. The success rates for these interventions are very low and the patient usually spends several months to years with debilitating pain and impaired function.
