Osteoarthritis Pain

Many of our patients arrive at the office after they have “tried everything else”. They have been told by their medical doctor that “you have arthritis, you’re getting older, there is nothing much we can do” and are prescribed medications which can have dangerous side effects, especially when taken for a long time.

Arthritis is a condition that is caused by wearing down of the cartilage between the joints. Different people develop it at different times in life: it is accepted as relatively normal if later in life, but can develop earlier due to prior injuries, the type of work they have had to do, and sometimes because of a genetic connection.

Some of the major joints affected by arthritis are the knees, hips, back, neck, shoulder and hand/wrist. Arthritis can be very painful and cause the affected areas to not function properly. Arthritis in one area can cause arthritis or pain in other areas as well. For instance, if you have arthritis in your left knee you may unconsciously change the way that you walk and you may compensate for this by putting more pressure on your right leg, leading to right hip problems. Pain killers can give temporary relief from pain and discomfort, but at a cost. They are not a safe long-term solution. Chiropractic care can alleviate pain by releasing pressure on the joints and on the nervous system with proper realignment. With time, repetition and compliance with the plan of care we may be able to restore proper joint movement, helping to ensure that you use proper motion so that you do not continue to cause injury to other parts of your body. We are not only concerned with the symptomatic, painful area, but rather the whole body. With the restoration and maintenance of proper movement and function, your well-being will increase and your dependence on dangerous drugs will decrease.
